Golf betting tips: Arnold Palmer Invitational and Puerto Rico Open

Must read

The DP World Tour and LIV Golf series take a break this week but that doesn’t mean that punting opportunities are hard to come by, with a double helping of PGA Tour action including a star-studded Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The latest in the list of PGA ‘designated events’, the Arnold Palmer takes place at the home of ‘the King’ himself, Bay Hill Club and Lodge, where rampant Jon Rahm is 6/1 favourite ahead of Rory McIlroy, who is a 9/1 shot, and defending champion Scottie Scheffler at 10/1.

While the stars are out in force in Florida, another PGA Tour tournament will take place at the Puerto Rico Open, an opposite-field event for which Nate Lashley is the 16/1 market leader.

Scheffler the pick of the big three

Scottie Scheffler claimed the Phoenix Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational last season and lightning could strike twice for the man who is hot on the heels of Rahm in the battle to be the world’s No 1-ranked golfer.

Scheffler returned to winning ways at TPC Scottsdale, tasting silverware for the first time since the Masters in April 2022, and followed up with a 12th-placed finish in the Genesis Invitational where he shrugged off fatigue to drive the ball superbly.

Riviera champ Rahm assumes favouritism and is in the form of his life but Scheffler has already shown he has what it takes to defend titles and he can retain his Bay Hill crown.

Tip: Scottie Scheffler to win outright @ 10/1 with bet365

Morikawa has right approach

Like Scheffler, Collin Morikawa looked like being the coming force in golf, winning the PGA Championship and the Open Championship before his form fell away in what was a mediocre 2022 campaign by his high standards.

However, the Californian has started 2023 in excellent form, narrowly failing to hold off Rahm in the Tournament of Champions before finishing third at the Farmers Insurance Open and fifth at Riviera last time out.

He hasn’t always performed to the peak of his powers in Florida but he did win a WGC event at The Concession in 2021 and he was ninth at Bay Hill on his last spin in 2020. This track demands elite approach play which is Morikawa’s strength.

Tip: Collin Morikawa to win outright @ 18/1 with bet365

Zalatoris made for Bay Hill battle

A windy weather forecast could make life difficult even for some of the best in the world but Will Zalatoris is a regular contender at the majors who knows how to hang tough and his return to fitness makes him a bet this week.

The Californian was fourth at the Genesis, 10th on his Bay Hill debut and his tee-to-green excellence should ensure he contends at the sharp end.

Wu can have backers cheering

There is a decent purse and a two-year PGA Tour exemption up for grabs at the Puerto Rico Open, where Dylan Wu is taken to make a name for himself while the big guns are battling it out at the Arnold Palmer.

Wu finished 10th at the Honda Classic last week, which is decent form in the company, and he’s generally been solid in much stronger PGA Tour fields this season, while one of his best Korn Ferry Tour performances came when runner-up in a coastal contest in the Bahamas.

Tip: Dylan Wu to win outright @ 28/1 with bet365

Aussie ace will relish Reserve

Harrison Endycott was another to catch the eye at the Honda, finishing 26th and impressing over the course of the tournament to add to his growing list of solid PGA Tour performances. He can shine at the Grand Reserve Country Club.

Endycott was 12th in the Fortinet Championship in September, 10th in island conditions in Bermuda, and he was a runaway winner of the Korn ferry Tour’s Huntsville Championship in 2022.

Tip: Harrison Endycott to win outright @ 35/1 with bet365

Kim looks ready to win again

Michael Kim completely lost his game after winning the 2018 John Deere Classic at a canter but the American has worked his way back to the PGA Tour via the Korn Ferry Tour.

He finished 16th in the Puerto Rico Open last season and was 11th at Pebble Beach at the start of February. A repeat of his Pebble performance makes him a threat.

Tip: Michael Kim to win outright @ 30/1 with bet365
